Updates

Who wants to handle php updates?  Who likes dealing with WordPress plugins?  We do!  We have migrated sites onto our platform that have been 4 major WordPress versions behind. Where there issues?  Yes!  Did we fix all of them!  Yes.  This is part of our deeper level of WordPress support.

  • PHP Updates: This is a very important part of the managed WordPress and is often overlooked. We make sure we upgrade sites to the most recent version of PHP, we do roll back when there are issues but work to fix those.
  • Core/Theme/Plugin Updates: We watch out-of-date plugins from our internal dashboard. For example, we host a little over 3000 sites right now, and our cockpit is showing 2293 plugins that need updating. This is less than 1 plugin per site. When a core is released this number jumps up pretty high until we work through them.
  • Core: When a new WordPress Core is released, we push the update to our sites within a week or so.
  • Themes: The Free and premium themes with keys are updated right when one is available, we do roll them back if an update has an issues, for the premium themes with no licenses, if an update is needed, we reach out for an active license to use on the site.
  • Plugins: Same as themes, the free and premium ones with licenses are updated once one is available. Please note the Plugin/Theme updates are a continuous process and the sites are updated as first come-first update. We may hold off on any updates that we have seen breaking sites i.e. an Elementor update causing memory timeouts.

Hosting/Server Structure

  • Infrastructure: We leverage WP Cloud, a platform designed specifically for WordPress and created by experts with over 15 years of experience running millions of sites on WordPress.com and WPVIP. Our hosting infrastructure utilizes Nginx and MariaDB for optimal performance, and we employ modern hosting techniques such as AMD EPYC CPUs, NVMe SSDs, and redundant 25Gbit network connectivity per server.
  • CPUs: Our active/passive server setup on bare metal allows us to scale vertically up to hundreds of CPU cores while maintaining real-time replicas in different regions with automatic failover.
  • PHP Workers: We provide 10 PHP Workers/CPU threads by default, with the ability to burst up to 110 when required. Each PHP worker has 512MB of memory, allowing bursting to go up to 55GB ( that is loads of RAM ).
  • CDN: All of the above is on top of a global core and edge network of data centers around the world, which power a built-in CDN, edge servers delivering full-site page caching by default. This setup ensures that our hosting infrastructure can support thousands of active users per site, handle massive bursts of site traffic, and cater to some of the largest sites on the web.
  • Server Caching: Multiple layers of caching are enabled by default on each BionicWP site. This includes Page caching (Batcache leveraging Memcached), database query caching (WordPress Persistent Object Caching, leveraging Memcached), OPCache, and global edge page caching (leveraging Nginx Varnish).
  • Site Down Alerts: We monitor all sites with a 3rd party application that alerts us when a site is down. The main reason we get these alerts is a domain has expired or someone has made a mistake with the A records for the site.
  • Backups: We prioritize data security with a robust backup system. We backup the database hourly for 30 days and perform daily filesystem backups, storing them for one week. Weekly backups are kept for a month to ensure data redundancy. All of this can be accessed by our user-friendly platform.
  • DNS: Inside our platform we have integrated a comprehensive DNS management solution which allows you to control every aspect of your website’s DNS settings.
